Because he was neither a doctor nor a scientist. In fact, in 1971, he received a degree in literature and foreign languages (Latin, Portuguese, French, and Spanish) from the faculty of literature at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Which, of course, gave little hint of either a personal or an educational interest in anything of a scientific nature. Instead, he became a scholar and the author of books on the clergy, with the ability to speak and write five languages.
NEVERTHELESS, FATHER ZAGO’S CURIOUS MIND WAS TO TAKE HIM ON AN INCREDIBLE SCIENTIFIC JOURNEY DESTINED TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF LIVES.
His adventure began in 1988.
Father Zago’s parish was located in a small village in the southern region of Brazil inhabited by Italian immigrants whose main economic activity was agriculture. From the very beginning, the people there found him to be a kind, caring person…never too busy to assist them in whatever way he could. For instance, he would bring food to those who were missing meals…or privately tend to local natives, as well as tend to those whose spirits needed gentle uplifting. Or, he would just roam the wards of the small nearby hospital. Actually, this was one of his favorite activities. Mostly, he would go from bed to bed, blessing the sick, talking to their families and, if necessary, administering the last rites to the dying.
One day, while having dinner with a group of friars, Father Zago was told by the provincial, Father Reckziegel, who worked in the parish on the outskirts of the town of Noiva-do-Marn, about a so-called mysterious “potent recipe” formula. It was said to produce “near miraculous and total healing” of cancer. According to Father Reckziegel, “Everyone in the shantytowns knows of the recipe for curing the deadly disease, and because it is relayed by the simple folk to everyone interested, no one dies of cancer.” Father Arno Reckziegel eventually wrote down the homemade recipe for cancer treatment on a piece of wrapping paper and gave it to Father Zago.
NATURALLY, FATHER ZAGO WAS SKEPTICAL AT FIRST.
After all, in an area where education was minimal and superstition was common, these kinds of stories were to be expected. He kept asking himself, how could such a simple homemade recipe produce such miracles?
Nevertheless, the more Father Zago thought about what he had just been told, the more compelled he was to follow up on these stories of a cancer cure. This was particularly true because many years earlier he had witnessed his father, a strong man, die of lung cancer at age 63, a mere eight months after a fatal tumor was diagnosed. As a result, throughout most of his life, Father Zago’s inner voice kept crying out, why…why…why!
However, little did he know that now, ten years after his father’s death, for some possibly divine reason, he had just been given the “seeds” to solving the enigma of this incurable disease.
Yes, they were in the stories he had been told. Fortunately, his curiosity was stimulated enough for him to follow up on whether these so called tales of a miraculous cure for cancer were worth investigating. He realized that, if true, what a gift from the Almighty such a cure would be. Particularly in Brazil, a country that lacked any form of Social Security, and where health services were in dismal shape.
NOTE: Brazil’s lack of medical care problem was compounded by the fact that the country’s official conventional medicine had become inaccessible to more than 70 percent of people living in extremely economically depressed areas. These conditions resulted in a scenario where only the nation’s rich are able to afford lengthy, costly, and sophisticated treatment. It was a situation that doomed poor cancer victims to death UNLESS such a miraculous cure really worked and it was made known to the people.
BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS, ALL PROVIDING CLUES.
Earlier, Father Zago had organized a Pastoral Group for Health in the Parish of San Antonio at Pouso Novo, Rio Grande Do Sul. It was here, to his surprise, that he learned a formula had been published in a book, A Farmacia da Natureza, written by Sister Maria Zatta. But there were two more surprises.
The next was when he found out that one of the group’s members had a stenciled print of the formula copied from another book, Saude Atraves das Plantas, by Paulo Cezar de Andrade dos Santo, Ed. Mundo Jovem. And his final surprise was still another book, Saude pela Alimentacao by Father Adelar Primo Rigo, containing another variation of the recipe.
